THE STORY
It was a Monday morning.
Derrick had just come back from a week in St. Augustine — salt air, no alarm clocks, the kids running on the beach, the kind of week that reminds you what life is actually supposed to feel like. And then Monday came.
Standing there getting ready for another 12-hour shift, something shifted. Not anger. Not frustration. Just clarity. The kind that hits you quietly and doesn't leave.
"I had spent years working for someone else's dream. I decided that morning I was done doing that."
Beach Bum Beards didn't start as a business plan. It started as a product Derrick built for himself, something that smelled like the beach he was grinding so hard to get back to. Something he could open on a Tuesday at 6am and feel, even for 30 seconds, like he was already there.
He made the first batch on his porch. Mixed it himself. Tested it himself. And realized pretty quickly that the feeling it gave him wasn't something he'd ever found in any product on any store shelf.
So he started sharing it.
THE EARLY DAYS
The first few years were honest work. Derrick kept his day job because the bills didn't care about his dream. He built Beach Bum Beards part-time, nights and weekends, around a schedule that left very little room for anything else.
There were moments where quitting would have been easier. Where the effort didn't match the return and the logical move was to walk away. But Derrick has never been wired for working for someone else's vision. He's always been built to build his own.

He kept going. Six years later, Beach Bum Beards is his full-time life. The porch is still the workshop. The products are still made by hand, in small batches, by the same man who mixed the first bottle.
That never changed. And it never will.

He wasn't the only one.
There are guys out there who buy Beach Bum Beards and take it to the beach specifically so they can talk to strangers about it. Guys who buy it as gifts because they know their friends need the feeling it gives them. Guys who have told us that they've been searching for years for something that didn't smell like a barbershop or a forest — something that actually smelled like a vacation.

Derrick's kids help pack orders. They help fill products. They're growing up inside this brand, learning what it means to build something with your own hands and your own vision. The oldest is already being groomed (no pun intended) to be part of the business one day.
This isn't just a company. It's a generational project. Something being built brick by brick so that one day Derrick's children and grandchildren can say: this is what he believed, and we carry it forward.

WHERE WE'RE GOING
Beach Bum Beards is not a grooming company with ambitions to stay small.
The vision is a coastal lifestyle brand — retail stores in beach towns along the Southeast coast, a full men's grooming line manufactured in-house, apparel that Beach Bums wear proudly at surf competitions and fishing tournaments and everywhere the coastal culture already lives.
The first retail location is planned for Gulfport, Florida. A place where any man can walk in off the street, smell every scent, talk to someone who actually knows the products, and leave feeling like he just checked into a resort.
"We're building something that outlives all of us. And every Beach Bum who joins us is part of that."
We're not there yet. But we're building every single day. And we never quit.
